We continue our look at husband/wife attitudes and relationships, as well as children/fathers.
Ephesians 5:31 - 6:4 31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and to the church. 33 Nevertheless you also individually, let each one love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respect her husband. Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 "that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth." 4 And fathers, do not provoke your children, but bring them up in the discipline and admonition of the Lord. |

Today we look at the conduct of the husband and wife. Also, we are looking at how to start this new year right with God, and not have our prayers hindered. (1 Pet 3:7)
Ephesians 5:22-28 22 Wives, subject yourselves to your own husbands, as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 But just as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your own wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 in order that He might sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he that loves his own wife loves himself. |

More studies on understanding what the will of the Lord is, and what it isn't. Ephesians 5:17-21 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always concerning all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of God. |
Wed, 29 December 2010
Today we continue our verse by verse study in Ephesians. Sometimes knowing what the "will of the Lord is" is difficult--not in this verse however, or others that we will study today. 15 "See then that you walk carefully, not as unwise, but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is." |

16 For if I preach the gospel, there is nothing for me to boast about, for necessity is pressed upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if unwillingly, I have been entrusted with a commission. 18 What then is my reward? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ free of charge, so as not to exploit my rights in the gospel. 19 For being free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, in order that I might win the more; 20 and to the Jews I became as a Jew, in order that I might win Jews; to those who are under law, as under law, in order that I might win those who are under law; 21 to those outside the law, as one outside the law (not being outside the law toward God, but subject to the law toward Christ), in order that I might win those outside the law; 22 to the weak I became as weak, in order that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the sake of the gospel, in order that I may become a partaker of it with you.

This is 1 message, cut in 2 for easier download/listening. From the pulpit of Island Community Church, in Merritt Island, Florida. Taken from 1 Corinthians 9:1-15
1 Corinthians 9:1-15 Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet indeed I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. 3 My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we not have the right to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have the right to take along a wife who is a sister, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or is it only Barnabas and I who must work for a living? 7 Who ever serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink from the milk of the flock? 8 Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say these things also? 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes." Is it oxen God is concerned about? 10 Or does He say this altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, for it is written, that he that plows should plow in hope, and he that threshes, in hope should partake of his hope. 11 If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? 12 If others partake of this right over you, do not we even more? Nevertheless we did not use this right, but bear all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat from the temple, and those who serve at the altar have a share in the altar? 14 Thus also the Lord commanded those who proclaim the gospel to live from the gospel. 15 But I used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should become thus for me; for it is better for me rather to die than that anyone should make my boasting void.

I've been thinking about this word "yield" in the Bible. Interesting that the word for yield is an antonym of where we get our word for apostasy. Apostasy is apo + histemi, apo = away from, histemi = to stand. But the word for yield is the compound word parastano: Para = near, and histemi, to stand. While apostasy means, to stand away from (that is, the Christian Faith--1 Tim 4:1), yield means, to stand beside. Romans 6:16 "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" We all are standing beside something, perhaps a crossroad, or a fork in the road: And the Bible asks the question, "To whom are you going to 'yield?'" To whichever you choose, the Bible says, this shall be your master: "...Whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" Friends, blow right on by sin, and don't even yield to it, not even for a moment--especially not even for a moment! But rather, yield (stand alongside of) the righteousness of God! Peace Pastor Paul

Today we're looking at Paul's instructions on marriage. (1 Cor 7:6-16) 1 Corinthians 7:6-16 "But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment. 7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 8 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife. 12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?"

Ephesians 5:6 "Let no one deceive you with empty words..." "for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be participants with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light-- 9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth, 10 proving what is well-pleasing to the Lord. 11 And have no partnership with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things being done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: "Awake, you who are sleeping, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." |

What lifestyle describes you? Also, we'll look in depth at what a reviler is. 1 John 3:6-9 6 Everyone who abides in Him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen Him nor has he known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who practices sin is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this reason the Son of God appeared, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one who has been born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. |

We're looking at the lifestyles that define a man or a woman.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor covetous, nor thieves, nor drunkards, nor abusive people, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you! But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. |

Part 2. Preached at Island Community Church in Merritt Island, Florida. A message on the importance not to seek counsel from the unrighteous. 1 Corinthians 6:1-8 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? 4 If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? 5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren? 6 But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers! 7 Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? 8 No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!

9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to associate with fornicators. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to leave this world! 11 But now I have written to you not to associate with anyone named a brother, who is a fornicator, or covetous person, or an idolater, or abusive person, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a person. 12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God will judge. Therefore "put away the evil person from yourselves."

Ephesians 4:17-19 17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. |

Ephesians 4:14-16 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head -- Christ -- 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. |

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 "According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire." |

John 13:27 says, 27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." (NKJV) Here's how the New American Standard Bible reads: 27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." This changes the meaning of the interaction between Jesus and Satan. As a result of Satan entering Judas, the text says, THEREFORE Jesus said to him..."What you do, do quickly." Jesus is talking to Satan, NOT to Judas exclusively! Certainly this sheds some light on the next verse: "Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him." Jesus was talking to Satan, not to Judas.

What does keeping the "unity of the Spirit" entail?
Proverbs 6:16-19 16 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. |

Ephesians 3:14-21 14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom every family in heaven and upon earth takes its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power by His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; being rooted and founded in love, 18 that you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height-- 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly more than all the things which we ask or think, according to the power which is working in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. |

The most common Scripture reference to help determine a minister's qualifications for pastor is found in 1 Tim 3:1-7. Here it is: "Faithful is this word: If anyone aspires to the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2 It is necessary, therefore, for a bishop to be irreproachable, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, well-behaved, hospitable, skillful at teaching; 3 not given to wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not loving money; 4 one ruling his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence; 5 (for if one does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a new convert, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Here's the 16 points that Paul uses to be a good yardstick in finding a qualified pastor: 1. Irreproachabe (blameless) 2. One woman man 3. Temperate 4. Sober 5. Well behaved 6. Hospitable 7. Good Teacher 8. Not a drinker 9. Not a bully 10. Not greedy for money 11. Gentle 12. Doesn't quarrel 13. Doesn't love money 14. Keeps his house in order 15. Not a new convert 16. Has a good testimony in town. I would take number 16 to mean, people who knew the potential pastor before Jesus Christ changed his life. And I was thinking, has there EVER been a person who has ever set foot on God's green earth, who can claim that these 16 things describes them before they were a Christian? What happens if a person wasn't a good teacher before Christ saved them? How about the person who had a bad habit of loving money a little bit too much, before Christ saved them? How about the person who was a bully all of their lives, because they were insecure, because their father hated them when they were growing up, and didn't love them? How about the person who was divorced before they ever gave a rip about the commands of God? Ah...now we're talkin! Sorry... Next. The moral of the story is this: Certainly these prerequisites apply to a person AFTER their conversion, otherwise NO ONE would be qualified to shepherd the flock of God. "And such were some of you." (1 Cor 6:11)

I've heard of an old movie entitled The Perils of Pauline. I wonder if that's a take on The Perils of Paul? 2 Corinthians 11:26 gives us the list of the perils that accompanied the apostle: "I have been in perils of: 1. Water 2. Robbers 3. My Own People 4. Other People 5. In the City 6. In the Country 7. In the Sea 8. Among Pseudo-Adelphoi It's the 8th one that fascinates me--In perils among "false brethren." False brethren. What, praytell, is a false brother? I can get my mind around a person's enemies being against them, and wishing to do them harm, but not someone who claims to be a brother! I guess a false brother would be someone who appeared to be a brother, but, in the hour of decision, they turned out to be something else.
1 Cor 3:13 says that the day is coming when "each one's work will become clear: for the day will declare it."

Ephesians 3:3-8 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery, just as I wrote before briefly, 4 with reference to which, when you read, you can understand my insight in the mystery of Christ, 5 which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: 6 that the Gentiles should be joint-heirs, and of the same body, and joint-partakers in His promise in Christ by the gospel, 7 of which I became a minister according to the free gift of the grace of God which was given to me according to the working of His power. 8 To me, the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, |
